Scotland runs its own NHS, with its own recruitment website, its own health boards and its own support for international medical graduates (IMGs). If you have been applying in England, a few things work differently. This guide explains where Scottish posts are advertised, which official bodies help IMGs, and where to get help with your application.

Quick answer

International doctors applying in Scotland should search vacancies on the NHSScotland recruitment website (apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk), not NHS Jobs. For official help, use the NHSScotland Careers International Recruitment Hub and the Scotland Deanery IMG pages run by NHS Education for Scotland (NES). For help with the written application itself, use the job pack, the advert's recruitment contact, and an independent application review.

How is NHS recruitment in Scotland different from England?

Health is devolved, so NHSScotland has its own structures. The main differences for an IMG are:

  • A different job website. Most NHS posts in England appear on NHS Jobs, with some employers using Trac. NHSScotland advertises its vacancies on its own recruitment website, apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk. You need a separate account there. If you have login or password problems, the jobseeker support hub handles technical issues.

  • Health boards, not trusts. In Scotland, you are employed by a health board rather than an NHS trust. NHSScotland Careers says you can search vacancies across 22 health boards. This includes the 14 territorial boards that run local services.

  • Scottish values. Application forms ask questions about NHSScotland values. The core values are care and compassion; dignity and respect; openness, honesty and responsibility; and quality and teamwork.

  • Training has its own Scottish information. Foundation and specialty recruitment is UK-wide, but Scotland's programmes, applicant guides and key dates are published on Scottish Medical Training, run by NES.

For a comparison of the two English systems, see our guide to Trac vs NHS Jobs for IMG doctors.

The 14 territorial health boards

According to NES, the territorial boards are:

  • NHS Ayrshire and Arran

  • NHS Borders

  • NHS Dumfries and Galloway

  • NHS Fife

  • NHS Forth Valley

  • NHS Grampian

  • NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

  • NHS Highland

  • NHS Lanarkshire

  • NHS Lothian

  • NHS Orkney

  • NHS Shetland

  • NHS Tayside

  • NHS Western Isles

Many boards also have their own careers pages and IMG resources. These are worth reading before you apply.

Where to find NHS job application help for international doctors in Scotland?

Help comes from several places. Each one covers a different part of the process.

  1. NHSScotland Careers International Recruitment Hub. The International Recruitment Hub was launched in 2023 by the Centre for Workforce Supply, part of NES. It explains working in NHSScotland and has a medicine section with pages for resident doctors, specialty and specialist doctors, consultants and GPs.

  2. NHSScotland's recruitment guidance. The how to apply and help with recruitment pages explain the online form, references, interviews and pre-employment checks.

  3. The recruiting health board. Each advert names a contact. For questions about a specific post, NHSScotland tells you to contact the hiring manager or recruitment team in the advert.

  4. Scotland Deanery IMG pages. The Scotland Deanery IMG Hub on Turas Learn has national and board-specific resources. It is for doctors at all career stages, including clinical fellows and SAS doctors, not only trainees.

  5. Independent application review. The official bodies explain the process, but they do not write or edit your form. CareerPro UK offers a £35 review and rewrite of NHS applications, including supporting statements, for IMGs.

How do I apply for an NHS job in Scotland as an IMG?

The NHSScotland application guide sets out the steps. Here they are, with notes for IMGs.

  1. Search and set alerts. Use apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk and set up email job alerts for your specialty and grade.

  2. Download the application pack. Read the job description and person specification closely. NHSScotland says the shortlisting panel uses them. Our person specification guide shows how to match each criterion.

  3. Register and gather your details. You will need qualifications, employment history and two referees with email addresses and phone numbers. References must cover your last three years of employment, and you must not use family or friends.

  4. Answer the assessment questions. The form asks about transferable skills, NHSScotland values and a summary of your application. NHSScotland advises you not to leave them blank. This is where most of your marks come from, so give real clinical examples.

  5. Submit before the closing date. Late applications are not accepted, and adverts can close early if many people apply.

  6. Prepare for interview and checks. After an offer, expect identity checks, occupational health screening, references, right-to-work checks, proof of GMC registration and, for some roles, Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership.

If you have time out of practice, our guide on explaining a career gap explains how to deal with it honestly.

Before you apply: eligibility

NHSScotland's eligibility page says you need full GMC registration with a licence to practise. Doctors who qualified outside the UK, EEA or Switzerland will usually take PLAB. Check visa requirements on GOV.UK and with your employer. Our guide to applying for NHS jobs after GMC registration covers what to do next.

What official IMG support and induction does Scotland offer?

NES and the Scotland Deanery provide IMG support that you will not find under the same names in England:

  • WINS (Welcoming IMGs New to Scotland). WINS is an enhanced induction programme for IMGs starting Foundation, specialty and SAS posts in Scotland. Educational supervisors are also invited. It replaced the earlier IMG orientation days and STEP programme. Booking is through Turas Learn.

  • Scottish IMG Buddy Scheme (SIBS). SIBS pairs IMGs new to NHSScotland with an experienced doctor, matched by location or specialty where possible. You must already be working in NHSScotland to request a buddy. It is not a job-search service.

  • Pre-induction webinars. The Deanery runs online pre-induction webinars for incoming IMGs, usually ahead of February and August starts.

  • Health board inductions. For example, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde runs a face-to-face IMG induction day on differences between Scottish and previous working practices.

  • GMC Welcome to UK practice. The GMC's free workshop is open to doctors new to UK practice, online or in person, wherever you work in the UK.

Can I do a clinical attachment in Scotland?

Some boards do offer them, but there is no single national scheme, and policies vary. For example, an NHS Lothian freedom of information response published in 2024 said it offered unpaid clinical attachments to IMGs, typically of one to four weeks. It also said overseas observers are offered observerships rather than attachments, and these are arranged through directorates.

To find one:

  1. Check the medical education or medical staffing pages of the health board you want.

  2. Email the relevant department with a short, professional request and your CV.

  3. Be clear about your GMC status, as this often decides whether you can have an attachment or only an observership.

Our clinical attachment UK guide covers emails, CVs and what to do during the placement.

How does training recruitment work in Scotland?

Foundation and specialty recruitment is run on a UK-wide basis. Applications go through the national Oriel system. Scotland publishes its own vacancies, applicant guides and key dates on Scottish Medical Training. Points that matter for IMGs:

  • Full GMC registration at application. From 2026 recruitment, specialty applicants must be fully registered with the GMC when they apply (MDRS).

  • Prioritisation. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 gives priority to certain applicants, such as UK graduates. The Scotland Deanery notes that it applies across the UK. Check the current prioritisation rules before you apply.

  • Visa sponsorship for trainees. In Scotland, Public Service Delivery Scotland (PSDS) is the Skilled Worker sponsor for all medical trainees. One Certificate of Sponsorship covers your whole programme, up to five years.

Because of these rules, many IMGs start in a non-training post, such as a clinical fellow or specialty doctor role. NHSScotland Careers suggests a clinical fellowship for doctors who want NHS experience before applying for training. See our guide to junior clinical fellow jobs for IMGs.

Getting your Scottish application right

Scottish forms reward specific, evidence-based answers that are clearly matched to the person specification and NHSScotland values. Common reasons for rejection are similar in Scotland and England: generic statements, missing essential criteria and no UK-relevant examples. Our article on why NHS applications get rejected goes through them.

Frequently asked questions

Are NHS Scotland jobs advertised on NHS Jobs?

NHSScotland uses its own recruitment website, apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk, to advertise its vacancies. Set up a separate account and job alerts there, even if you already use NHS Jobs or Trac for posts in England.

Does NHS Scotland help international doctors with applications?

NHSScotland Careers and the Scotland Deanery provide guidance, eligibility information and IMG induction and support, such as WINS and the SIBS buddy scheme. They do not review or rewrite individual applications. For that, people often use an independent service.

Do I need GMC registration before applying for jobs in Scotland?

To work as a doctor in NHSScotland, you need full GMC registration with a licence to practise. Check each advert's person specification, as some posts accept applicants who are close to registering. For specialty training, full registration is needed at the time of application.

Who sponsors visas for doctors in Scotland?

For non-training posts, the employing health board usually acts as sponsor, so check the advert. For medical trainees, Public Service Delivery Scotland is the Skilled Worker sponsor.

Can IMGs get clinical attachments in Scotland?

Some health boards, such as NHS Lothian, have said they offer clinical attachments or observerships, but arrangements vary by board and department. Contact the board's medical education team directly.
