NHS Job Application Tips for IMGs

"Involvement in clinical audit or quality improvement" appears on almost every NHS person specification, from junior clinical fellow posts to consultant jobs. Yet many international medical graduates are unsure of the difference between an audit and a quality improvement project (QIP), or how to describe their project so that it earns marks. This guide explains both in plain English.

Almost every NHS person specification includes a line like "evidence of leadership and management skills" or "ability to work effectively in a team". Many international medical graduates skip this criterion because they have never been a clinical lead or a department manager. That is a missed opportunity, because shortlisters are not looking for a job title. They are looking for evidence that you can take responsibility, organise people and improve how things work.
